Infant and Pediatric Massage (1.5 credits, hybrid course, winter 2022)

Instructor Expectations:

This course provides massage therapy students with an introduction to infant and pediatric massage concepts and techniques. The curriculum content is already established and approved by internal and external processes. The course is designed to be completed over a 7 week period, in a hybrid format. All lecture and some laboratory activities are completed online through the course website, and hands-on lab activities are conducted on campus. Instructors for this course would be expected to record lecture videos for each week, facilitate virtual discussion boards, grade assignments, and assessments, and provide feedback to students and program administration in a timely manner.

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to infant and pediatric massage therapy. Students will learn the basics of how massage therapy is used and adapted during the growth and development in children, starting with micro preemie through adolescence, as well as gain an understanding of many common conditions you will see in a generally healthy infant and pediatric population. We will discuss how massage therapy is being used today in many settings and how massage impacts the child and the family. We stress the importance of research with infant/pediatric massage in cultivating an evidence informed practice, and identify regulations and guidelines for working safely and appropriately with these populations in a massage practice.
